The purely mineral plant substrate BASICPON provides sensitive plants and young cuttings with ideal conditions for development tailored to their needs. The carefully balanced composition of the substrate—made from Pumice, Lava, and Zeolite—creates an airy yet stable root environment that ensures optimal growing conditions. The substrate distributes moisture evenly, reliably retains water, and, thanks to its high drainage capacity, prevents waterlogging and the associated root rot. For sensitive plant species, BASICPON is a professional and particularly gentle alternative to conventional potting soil.

The mineral structure remains permanently volume stable and does not compact, allowing the substrate to be reused for several years without losing quality. Since BASICPON is not pre-fertilized, the nutrient supply can be precisely tailored to the needs of each plant. This allows particularly sensitive species, young plants, and cuttings to grow in a controlled and uniform manner.

The purely mineral composition is 100% peat-free, free of organic components, and provides no breeding ground for gnats or mold. This makes BASICPON ideal for hygienic indoor plant cultivation and also an excellent choice for people with allergies.

BASICPON can be used both as a standalone plant substrate and as an additive to loosen up traditional potting soil. It is ideal for sensitive houseplants, cuttings, offshoots, and young plants, and works perfectly with all LECHUZA planters featuring an irrigation system as well as conventional planters.

Compatible Accessories

BASICPON is unfertilized to allow for a nutrient supply tailored to your plant’s needs. PERFECT LEAF slow-release and liquid fertilizers provide houseplants with sufficient nutrients.

To keep track of your plant’s water needs even in conventional flower pots, you can use the PON watering indicator. It reliably indicates in the mineral substrate when your plant needs to be watered.

Planting in LECHUZA planters

Step 1:

Place the irrigation layer—included with LECHUZA planters—on the divider in the planter. This is important to ensure that water is transported from the reservoir to the plant and to prevent waterlogging.
Then fill the planter with a thin layer of your chosen substrate, such as BASICPON—just enough so that your plant sits at the correct height in the planter.

Step 2:

Place the plant in your planter as usual. You don’t need to completely remove the soil from the roots.

Step 3:

Now you can fill the planter completely with the substrate of your choice, for example, using the PON funnel.

Step 4:

For the first 12 weeks, water your plant as usual from above, directly onto the substrate. Water only as much as the plant can absorb.
Make sure there is as little water as possible in the reservoir.
After this initial watering phase, you can water your plant through the water shaft. For planters without the LECHUZA irrigation system, continue to water the plant from above. You can find more information here.

FAQ
In which containers can I use PON?

All PON substrates can be used in both planters with irrigation systems and in conventional flowerpots or window boxes.

When should I water PON?

Since PON’s mineral substrates retain water very well, the plant needs to be watered less frequently. Water needs can be determined either by the finger test, the PON watering indicator, or the water level indicator on LECHUZA planters.

Can I mix PON with soil?

Yes, PON can be mixed with potting soil. We recommend the purely mineral plant substrates BASICPON and MONOPON. Both substrates are not pre-fertilized, loosen up the soil mix, and improve drainage.

When should I fertilize BASICPON?

The BASICPON plant substrate is not pre-fertilized. Nutrients can be added as needed using PON’s liquid or Slow-release fertilizers. For houseplants, we recommend the PERFECT LEAF fertilizer.

Are PON plant substrates peat-free?

All PON plant substrates are peat-free.
