The purely mineral LECHUZA-PON XXL plant substrate is ideal for large plants and demanding species that require a particularly stable, well-aerated root environment. With an extra-coarse grain size of up to 2 cm, the XXL substrate offers the ideal structure for large container and houseplants such as Alocasia, Strelitzia, or Monstera in large planters. The coarse-grained substrate enables excellent root aeration, reliably prevents waterlogging, and thus ensures healthy, strong roots. The mineral composition—consisting of coarse Pumice, lava, Zeolite, and Slow-release fertilizer—creates a substrate with exceptional volume stability that securely supports even large plants and provides them with the necessary stability in large planters. LECHUZA-PON XXL reliably stores water and nutrients and releases them as needed. At the same time, the substrate remains permanently loose and does not compact, which is a key difference from traditional potting soil.

The included slow-release fertilizer supplies large houseplants, shrubs, or grasses with nutrients for about 6 months immediately after planting. The mineral-based, 100% peat-free composition provides no breeding ground for gnats, making it ideal for indoor use. Thanks to its coarse grain size, LECHUZA-PON XXL can be used not only as a complete growing medium but also as a decorative top layer.

LECHUZA-PON XXL can be used as a drainage layer and for complete planting of all indoor and outdoor plants. PON plant substrates can be used in LECHUZA planters with an irrigation system or in conventional flower pots.

Recommended Accessories

After about half a year, the fertilizer’s effect in the substrate begins to wear off, and it’s time to fertilize the plants again. With PERFECT LEAF slow-release and liquid fertilizers, houseplants are once again supplied with sufficient nutrients, allowing them to flourish with fresh, vibrant greenery.

To keep track of your plant’s water needs even in conventional flower pots, you can use the PON watering indicator. It reliably indicates when your plant needs to be watered in the mineral-based substrate.

Planting in LECHUZA planters

Step 1:

Place the irrigation layer—included with LECHUZA planters—on the divider in the planter. This is important to ensure that water is transported from the reservoir to the plant and to prevent waterlogging. Then fill the planter with a thin layer of your chosen substrate, such as LECHUZA-PON. Use just enough so that your plant sits at the correct height in the planter.

Step 2:

Place the plant in your planter as usual. You don’t need to completely remove the soil from the roots.

Step 3:

Now you can fill the planter completely with the growing medium of your choice, for example, using the PON funnel.

Step 4:

For the first 12 weeks, water your plant as usual from above, directly onto the substrate. Water only as much as the plant can absorb. Make sure there is as little water as possible in the reservoir.

After this initial watering phase, you can water your plant through the water shaft. For planters without the LECHUZA irrigation system, continue to water the plant from above. You can find more information here .

FAQ
In what types of planters can I use PON?

All PON substrates can be used in both planters with irrigation systems and in traditional flowerpots or window boxes.

When should I water PON?

Since PON’s mineral-based substrates retain water very well, plants need to be watered less frequently. You can determine the water needs by doing a finger test, using the PON Watering indicator, or checking the Water level indicator on LECHUZA planters.

Can I mix PON with soil?

Yes, PON can be mixed with potting soil. We recommend the purely mineral plant substrates BASICPON and MONOPON. Neither of these substrates is pre-fertilized; they loosen up the soil mix and improve drainage.

When should I fertilize LECHUZA-PON XXL?

The LECHUZA-PON XXL plant substrate is pre-fertilized for approximately 6 months. After that, nutrients can be replenished using PON’s liquid or Slow-release fertilizer. For houseplants, we recommend the PERFECT LEAF fertilizer.

Are PON plant substrates peat-free?

All PON plant substrates are peat-free.
